Of this part of the series of the stories that haunted me, which is about my interactions with ghosts at the Brisbane BOGO Road Jail, also known as the Brisbane Jail. So last episode, you heard the story of Patrick Kenneth, who was murdered by the state. Now you'll hear from Ellen and Ellen.

19 PM on the 20th of September, 2024, and this is what she said. Hello there. Thank you for realizing that I am indeed a woman who is cruelly murdered by mistake. When I say mistake, I mean no mistake. That's what they did to women in those days who murdered their wife beating husbands. I was indeed in that dead jail BOGO Road. And you saw my picture in the official government records where I had my best lace black morning dress on for I loved my husband, but by hell did he have a temper. And I have been listening to those other souls and I agree that's something that changed in my husband. When we moved up to the top end of Australia, it wasn't what he drank because we were poor. But not poor enough to go without a refreshing ale at the end of a hard day's work, if you know what I mean. And I can see in your aura that you have been as poor as we were back then, but you made it through with love. And I can see it's not in this lifetime, but I respect your privacy and you know, which lifetime. I mean, I have faith that God. Or whoever you worship will rectify the load that you have born in this lifetime holding space for all those men to go to the light. I know you heard me and I know you will do right by typing exactly what you saw. You saw that men in that jail, they raped the women prisoners night after night after night. Even when we screened the place down like a banshee, no one came to our rescue and the only respite was death. So, you know, therefore, I was glad to die in the end. I denied murdering my husband because it was self-defense. I hit him as hard as he hit me, and in the end it was a case of the last one, standing winds. I had brute strength that night and I don't know why or how some might say that I finally stood up for myself, but some might say he had it coming to him. Now, some might say also that I'd finally had enough of my hard life and the regular beatings and the lack of money and well anger sometimes gets the better of one, doesn't it? Now I'm not going to go into the details because I'm healed and whole now, and I'm ready to have another go at life. You've given me courage, young lady, 'cause I know you are nearly half a century old and your soul is older than any I've seen before, but I'm not a religious woman anymore. But I wanted to say one thing before I go. Bless your soul and amen. Ellen Thompson. As she walked away, Ellen begged me to stop writing the stories of the people of Bogo Road Jail because their stories would make me weep a hundred Rivers. Post session note. According to the official government records, Ellan was hung alongside her boyfriend. Who admitted he killed Ellen's husband. However, the murder sentence was not quashed. Ellen made the history books in 1887 as the only woman legally hanged in Queensland. She was buried in an unmarked grave in South Brisbane Cemetery, and this is what was said at her trial. Prisoner Ellen Thompson and New Prisoner John Harrison have been found guilty of the crime of murder on evidence, which I must say to my mind is quite sufficient. One of the jury has thought to make recommendation of Mercy on the grounds that he's of the opinion that there may have been a quarrel between the murdered man and Harrison immediately proceeding the murder. I will of course forward that recommendation to the proper authorities. I can give you no more hope than that. That you, Harrison killed the old man to Thompson. I have no doubt. Whatever the jury have found that you did so, and I confidently believe that Thompson's wife was present at the time, aiding and abetting you. You committed a most cruel murder and you did it, in my opinion, for this sake of gain, nothing now remains for me. But to pass upon you both the sentence of the law. I have no option in the matter. The sentence that I have to pass on to you, Ellen Thompson, is that you'll be taken to the place once you came and then to the Brisbane jail, and then on that date to be appointed by the governor In council. You'll be led to the place of execution and that you'll be hanged by their neck until your body be dead, justice Pope Cooper. And so no matter what you think and whether you research that trial and that murder. There's a lot of interesting things that have come out of this series and all we can say to all of the people involved in all of the families and in all of the judicial sides, all of the inmates, all of the wardens, all of the police officers, all the people who were left behind is bless your soul and namaste.
